Flight Seat Charges Update

Flight Seat Charges Update: Seat selection is a minor convenience that can make a huge difference to many of those who are traveling. It can be sitting by the window or being close to the family, but that small decision counts.

Not long ago, there was hope that such comfort would be provided without additional expense. Things have changed and now that expectation has become a step back.

This has been done by the government which has resolved to withdraw its previous proposal that sought to offer a significant number of flight seats at free choice. To the passengers, this implies that things are going to be much as usual at least in the short term.

What Was the Previous Proposal

Flight Seat Charges Update

In the recent past, this was to be changed so that flying could be more passenger friendly. This was meant to enable free choice of up to 60 percent of seats per flight.

Currently, a free choice of the seats is offered by approximately 20 percent, and the rest are offered at an extra price. This charge may vary between 200 and 2000 depending on the airline and the route. The suggested change was supposed to minimize this load and allow passengers to have more freedom when purchasing tickets.

The Reason Airlines Could Not Have Been Comfortable

Although this proposal was very appealing to the passengers, airlines were worried. Large carriers believed that such an amount of free seats would directly impact their earnings.

The airlines claimed that they would be forced to raise the price of tickets in the event that they lose the revenue that they receive due to the seating of seats. This, according to them, would transfer the cost back on to the passengers in a different manner, and will make travelling more expensive in general. This was one of the issues that contributed to the government halting the plan.

What This Implicates on Passengers Now

In the meantime, the present system will persist. This will only imply that passengers will continue paying an extra amount when they wish to select specific seats beforehand.

Nevertheless, there is a slight consolation. The government has requested officials to make sure that the passengers who book using the same PNR are seated side by side. It has also emphasized that there should be an open process of allocating seats so that the travelers are not discriminated.

Could Ticket Prices Have Increased

The risk of increased ticket prices was one of the largest issues that informed this decision. The airlines explained that it would not be easy to absorb the cost of free seat selection.

Ticket fares could have increased to counter their losses, and this would have impacted everyone including those who are indifferent about the choice of their seat. The government appears to be trying to evade this situation in the near future by taking a back seat on the proposal.

A Decision Still Open for Discussion

This is not the ultimate conclusion of the idea. The government has put on hold the move so as to give more time to discuss and review. It would like to make sure that any further action is a benefit to the passengers without causing new issues in the pricing.

Meanwhile, other passenger-friendly enhancements, including improved policies regarding carrying of sports gear or musical instruments are also receiving attention.

What Travelers need to remember

In the meantime, passengers may book on the basis of their plans. In case it is important to select a particular seat, the latter can still be accompanied by a premium charge. However, as long as discussions continue, changes may always occur in the future.
