IRCTC New Ticket Booking Rules: The start of a new year always brings new hopes and changes. If you’re a train traveler, 2026 has brought a significant change for you.
IRCTC has implemented new rules to make the ticket booking system more transparent, which will directly impact every ordinary passenger. These new rules aim to curb ticket touts and fake accounts so that genuine passengers can get confirmed tickets on time.
Why IRCTC Changed Ticket Booking Rules
For the past few years, there have been persistent complaints that seats disappear within minutes during Tatkal and advance ticket bookings. Fake IRCTC accounts and automated booking systems were considered the main reasons for this.

The railways took this problem seriously and identified millions of fake accounts. In the interest of passengers, it has now been decided to make Aadhaar-based verification mandatory so that ticket bookings reach the right hands.
| Rule Category | Old System | New Rule (2026) | Applicable Date | Impact on Passengers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online Booking Access | All users allowed | Only Aadhaar-verified users | Dec 29, 2025 | Reduces ticket fraud |
| Booking Time (Opening Day) | 8 AM to 12 Midnight | 8 AM to 12 PM (initially) | Dec 29, 2025 | Priority to verified users |
| Extended Booking Window | Not applicable | 8 AM to 4 PM | Jan 5, 2026 | More time for genuine users |
| Mandatory Aadhaar | Optional | Compulsory for online booking | Jan 12, 2026 | Blocks fake accounts |
| PRS Counter Booking | Available | No change | Ongoing | Offline booking unaffected |
Advance Booking Only Available for Aadhaar-Linked Accounts
According to the new railway rules, on the first day of the advance reservation period, online ticket booking will only be available through IRCTC accounts that are verified with Aadhaar.
This system has been in effect since December 29, 2025, under which only Aadhaar-linked users will be able to book reserved tickets online from 8 AM to 12 PM. This will give ordinary passengers a better chance during the initial hours.
Major Change in Time Limit in January 2026
Keeping passenger convenience in mind, the railways made further changes to the booking time from January 2026. From January 5, 2026, the time for Aadhaar-verified accounts was extended from 8 AM to 4 PM.
This means that for eight hours, only users whose identity is fully verified will be able to book tickets. This is expected to reduce congestion and pressure on the servers.
No Online Tickets Without Aadhaar from January 12, 2026
The biggest change came into effect on January 12, 2026. After this date, on the first day of advance reservation, i.e., the day tickets open for booking, online ticket booking will be possible only through Aadhaar-verified IRCTC accounts from 8 AM to 12 AM (midnight).
Accounts that are not linked to Aadhaar will not be able to book tickets online on that day. However, there is no change in the process of purchasing tickets from PRS counters.
Strict action continues against fake accounts
According to railway officials, approximately three crore fake IRCTC accounts have been closed so far. In addition, around three crore more suspicious accounts are under investigation.
It is estimated that a total of six crore fake accounts will be completely deactivated. This step will bring transparency to ticket booking and weaken the network of touts, directly benefiting ordinary passengers.
Why this change is necessary for passengers
While these new rules may cause some inconvenience to passengers initially, in the long run, it will make the system more secure and reliable.
Aadhaar verification will not only prevent fraud but also improve the ticket booking experience. For passengers who travel by train regularly, linking their Aadhaar to their IRCTC account has now become a prudent step.
How to link Aadhaar and avoid problems

If you haven’t linked your IRCTC account with Aadhaar yet, complete this process as soon as possible. This will not only allow you to book tickets under the new rules but also prepare you for any future changes. The railways have clearly stated that this decision has been taken in the best interest of the passengers.
